What’s all the flap about Twitter?
Admittedly I am not a Twitter user though I like to think of myself as semi-technologically adept and up-to-date. And while getting a late start into the blogging game doesn’t exactly support that assertion, let me just tell you I was one of the first kids on the block with a Tandy TRS-80 way back when. Thanks Dad!
That being said I am at a loss when it comes to Twitter. What’s the point? Microblogging? Who wants to be ‘hyper-connected?’ Purportedly its a great tool if you are running late to a meeting, eating soup or engaged in any one of the million other mundane activities that fill our lives. Within an instant, you can log on and let the world know. And, since we are an ‘on the go society’ you can you can upload your current status by IM or SMS. “I’m shopping for lingerie.” “The toilet is overflowing!” “I just got fired for telling the world every little detail of my life and not doing my work.” It just seems too silly to me but apparently it is a very popular thing.
Can someone please share the value of such a service? Is it really great for keeping in touch with family and loved ones? Do they really care if you are eatting soup? Or is it just another extension of our voyeuristic society? Unless I hear otherwise, it is just technology gone awry to me. Really, let’s put our time into more noble causes. Work on ending hunger in our communities or helping the homeless find a warm, dry place for the night other needed supports. Come on America. Help me out.
